A chronicle of the Cristeros War (1926-1929), which was touched off by a rebellion against the Mexican government's attempt to secularize the country.
"For Greater Glory" a Mexican film based on the Cristero Wars and starring Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria will be released this weekend.
The film, directed by Oscar Nominee Dean Wright and written by Michael Love, follows the story of Enrique Gorostieta Velarde (Andy Garcia), who despite being atheist, decides to organize the rebels in their religious war against the state and finally embraces the Christian faith. While working on the film, Garcia stated that he was thrilled about working in Mexico and its historical landmarks. While working on his character, Garcia stated that director Dean Wright gave him a book about the war and he was immediately passionate about the project.
The Cristero War also known as the La Cristiada took place from 1926 to 1929 and was a revolutionary uprising and counter-revolution against the Mexican government. The original rebellion was set off by the persecution of Roman Catholics and the ban on their public religious practices. La Cristada is particularly known for the Mexican women and children who assisted the rebels in smuggling guns and ammunition in secret as well as for certain Mexican priests who were tortured and murdered in public.
During a press conference Andy Garcia stated that the film spoke about the people who are ready to die for freedom when it is taken away from them and added that freedom is one of the most precious assets humans have. Because of this universal theme, the film's producer, Pablo Jose Barroso and Wright decided to make the film in English. They stated that although they shot the film entirely in Mexico and that the subject material was about Mexican history, its focus was universal and that the English language would reach a larger audience.
The film also stars an array of international Hispanic actors including Guatemalen actor Oscar Issac (Drive), Mexican Soap Opera Actor Eduardo Verastegui (Bella), Mexican music legend Ruben Blades and Colombian Oscar nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace). The legendary 8 time Oscar nominee Peter O'Toole (Venus) also joins the cast.
