Storyline 
In the 19th century, a serial killer begins murdering victims using methods from Edgar Allan Poe's stories. Poe himself teams up with a young Baltimore detective to get inside the murder's mind and try and stop more of his fictional works becoming grisly fact. As the hunt intensifies, Poe's own love, Emily Hamilton, becomes a target for the killer.

This European American action thriller film is directed by James McTeigue who was an assistant director in The Matrix trilogy and made his bombastic debut in 2006 with V for Vendetta. At first the producers of the film thought Jeremy Renner should perform the role of Edgar Allan Po however he was replaced by John Cusack since the former preferred another role in highly popular Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Originally the film was thought to describe the last days of one of the most prominent American classical detective writers Edgar Allan Po. However, historically Po spent his last days oblivious of the reality in everlasting drunken condition and died under very mysterious circumstances.

 However, the film portrays Allan Po as an author of very popular detective stories published in the local newspaper. And, when two women: a mother and a daughter are found dead it occurs that the details of their murder are identical to those from one of the Po’s works published in the magazine. Detective Emmett Fields performed by Luke Evans suspects that Po has to do with the brutal murder and conveys him to the police department. But at the time of Po’s questioning another brutal murder happens. Having realized that his works mastermind somebody’s evil plans Po decides to join the investigation and to throw all his deductive abilities in order to stop these murders.

The film was created to suit different genres fans. Take aesthete – they will find a beautiful stylish scenery, while intellectuals would be happy to unveil the mystery of the murder which won’t be unveiled till the last minutes of the film; thriller lovers will be tensed throughout all 111 minutes of the film, and action fans will be pleased with pursuits and shootings and knife armed fights. Of course the film is added by the love story, but what’s truly priceless here is that lots of people will like to refresh their memory and read Po’s original masterpieces.
